About us

The Friends of St Nicholas Church, Ash raise money for the preservation, maintenance and improvement of this historic and ancient church.

We are a registered charity and secular organisation who appreciate the architectural and cultural significance of this 13th century building, including: -

  • The cruciform design, dominated by the central tower, built in about 1500, today contains 10 bells. Its spire can be seen at considerable distance and was once a maritime navigational aid.
  • The surviving collection of monumental effigies, including several extremely attractive brasses, has been authoritatively described as the finest in Kent.
  • The Victorian alterations including the north porch and pulpit, designed by the architect William Butterfield, and some beautiful stained-glass windows.
  • The churchyard which has been extended three times.

We are supported by our members (or ‘Friends’ as we like to call them!) who donate each year.

To raise further funds, and to have some fun in the process, the committee run social and community events throughout the year including our annual Ash Art Exhibition & Sale which attracts artists and buyers throughout Kent.

However, the Church building in Ash requires constant upkeep to enable it to meet the needs of the whole community and we need your help!

By choosing us as your ‘good cause’ and buying tickets for the Dover Lotto you will allow us to maintain, improve and enhance this important building, to ensure it continues to be the centre of village life for years to come.

Thank you for your support and good luck!
